  4. years there has been increased Maori
  5. consciousness, and a demand for official
  6. status for the Maori language and review of
  7. the Waitangi Treaty of 1840 (under which the
  8. Maoris surrendered their lands to British
  9. sovereignty). The Maori Unity
  10. Movement/Kotahitanga was founded 1983 by Eva
  11. Rickard. The Maoris claim 70% of the
  12. country's land, and have secured a ruling
  13. that the fishing grounds of the far north
  14. belong solely to local tribes.
